Mission Vestments from the Permanent Collection

at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, California

and the Annual CSA-Western Region Meeting

CSA-WR Board member and Textile Conservator, Elise Yvonne Rousseau will discuss the worldly origins of these opulent objects spanning more than two centuries and four continents. Elise has a broad base of knowledge of the museum’s artifacts as she was formerly the guest curator and helped to re-design and interpret the Pre-Contact, Mission Period and Early California Permanent Collection History Galleries. Our program will begin with a tour of the galleries, as well as, a special exhibition of selected vestments: Mission Vestments from the Permanent Collection. The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University houses one of the most important collections of ecclesiastical garments and liturgical accessories dating from the founding of Mission Santa Clara de Asís in 1777 through the 1920s. This exhibition presents groups of 17th and 18th century vestments that demonstrate a range of styles and purposes as well as fabric and production origins. An examination of the composition and use of these textiles offers us a glimpse into the history and role of the global silk trade with far-east Asia on the Spanish Galleons during the height of the Spanish Empire, Colonial Nueva España and into the Franciscan Missions in California.

After lunch, you are welcome to explore the other exhibits in the de Saisset at Santa Clara University: Jeweled Prosthetics: Jewelry as Extension of Self, Beyond Function: Fiber, Fabric and Finery, and Figure Forward: Works by Bay Area Figurative Artists, as well as further exploration of the permanent collection History Galleries. You are also encouraged to view the Mission Santa Clara de Asís, to see their exceptional collection of Mexican reredos (altar pieces). This current mission chapel is the 6th re- building, replicating the 1825 version. A bronze bell that was installed in 1777 has rung every day at 8:30 pm in honor of the dead and is on view in the museum.
